What Can Counselling/ Psychotherapy Offer You?

When life gets challenging, talking to friends and family might be comforting, but sometimes, you may feel the desire to connect with someone from outside your immediate circle. Someone who can offer you objective support for whatever you're going through.

Our work together can lead to:

Enhanced Self-Perception: Discover a clearer and more compassionate view of yourself.

Improved Self-Acceptance: Develop a greater liking and acceptance of yourself.

Empowered Decision-Making: Gain a sense of self-determination and the ability to make decisions based on your own understanding of a situation.

Increased Self-Trust: Feel more confident in your ability to trust yourself.

Deeper Connection: Experience a deeper connnection to yourself alongside more profound connection with others.

Relief from Anxiety/ Depression: When you know yourself better, and feel happier with who you are, your feelings of Anxiety/ Depression lessen.

Research tells us that how well you feel you can relate to your counsellor/ psychotherapist is likely to determine how successful your counselling/ psychotherapy experience is (Mick Cooper, 2008).

What Life Challenges Can Be Explored in Counselling/ Psychotherapy?

My training and practice has equipped me to support individuals through a diverse array of life experiences, including:

  • Surviving and healing from any form of abuse.

  • Managing unexplained or understood anger, providing a space for processing.

  • Dealing with anxiety and panic attacks, helping you regain control.

  • Coping with the loss of a loved one.

  • Addressing feelings of low mood or depression.

  • Exploring and understanding your own identity.

  • Managing shame and stress or recovering from traumatic events

  • Overcoming loneliness or feelings of being stuck.

  • Navigating challenges in various types of relationships, be it romantic, sexual, friendships, or family dynamics (Relationship Therapy or Group Therapy may also be of interest).

In my practice I have worked with individuals who, for various reasons, feel hindered from fully embracing life. Whether the reasons for your struggles are crystal clear or still shrouded in confusion, please do not hesitate to get in touch and share what is happening for you.

I am a Person-Centred Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I trained at the Metanoia Institute which is respected for its high quality training.

The Person-Centred Approach to counselling and psychotherapy was developed primarily by Carl Rogers.  A key difference with the Person-Centred approach is that it places it’s emphasis on, and believes in, the human capacity for growth, choice and creativity.

The Person-Centred Approach was the first approach to therapy to be developed out of substantial clinical research evidence. The extensive research suggests that, as your psychotherapist, I can be of most help to you by providing a facilitative therapeutic space that trusts you to explore your own unique inner world with me right alongside you. This results in you locating solutions to any of your concerns from within yourself. Change that is uniquely tailored to you as an individual and your situation and life experiencing is change that is long-lasting.

The Person-Centred Approach places you as the expert in relation to you and your experiences (albeit I am aware of how experiences such as abuse, anger, anxiety, loss, depression, trauma, loss of identity etc can impact each of us) and me, as your therapist, to expert in providing a facilitative space and facilitative relationship with you as the client.

Sometimes this 'non-directive' approach can feel unusual, especially as we are often used to handing over power to experts and letting them direct us. Yet it was found, via extensive research, that over even a short space of time a client’s inner resources can flourish in the facilitative environment of empathic understanding, lack of judgement and congruence (or realness) offered by the person-centred psychotherapist.

Changes that can occur with person-centred therapy include:

  • your view of yourself can change

  • your view of your life experiences to date can date

  • your attitude towards yourself can change

  • you can feel stronger

  • you can feel more self-determining e.g. a sense of being able to make decisions for self based on your own sense of a situation

  • you can generally feel more confident in your ability to trust yourself

  • you can discover new feelings

  • you can have new experiences

These changes can result in a greater sense of acceptance and compassion towards yourself as well as a deeper connection towards others.
